Frequently
Asked
Questions

Your questions are welcome

Asking questions is essential to your decision making process. I have a few frequently asked questions listed below, but if you don't find an answer, just ask me in my contact form. Some of your questions might require a personal answer that doesn't quite fit a cookie cutter answer. Many of your questions can also be answered in a consultation!

What Payment/ Financial options do you offer?

I take payments with cash or I can send an invoice with the option pay with credit, debit or HSA card.
Payment shouldn't be a barrier for families to receive the birth experience that they want. To help assure that I can serve the clients that would like to hire me, I do my best to be flexible. Flexible payment plans are available for all of the families that I serve. I offer financial aid for those that are in financial need. Low income and under resourced families are welcome to apply. Donations for the financial aid come from those that choose my "indulgent" packages. I also offer a referral system.

How is your role diffrent from my partner's/ loved one's?

The only person that knows you on a deep, intimate level is your birth partner. The support that I provide is to enhance that support by assuring your other needs are met, and that your partner/loved ones can focus on what naturally comes to them. While they hold you and connect with you, I refill the water, apply comfort measures, and everything else that they shouldn't be needing to think about. Not only is my role as a doula different from your partner's, but I am also there for them. I provide support to you and your partner. I will assure your family's physical, mental and emotional needs are met.

What should I look for in a doula?

It's okay to feel unsure about what you are looking for, especially if this is very new to you. You'll soon see that your intuition will guide you to the right person for you. A Doula is a person that provides you support throughout your pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. The support every doula provides will look different, just as every birthing person will have different needs. Think about how you best feel supported- while you are sick, lonely, overwhelmed or stressed. (If you have experience with birth, that also helps!) Those are the traits you should be looking for. Interview a few doulas and see how you feel when you talk to them. "The one" will stand out to you. Experience, additional services, availability and proximity are also factors that may influence your decision making process.

What should I look for in a Photographer?

Look at your photographer's photos. Each photographer has a different style and voice. The way each of us tells a story will be different. Find an artist that their work speaks directly to you. Many photographers offer birth photography, but do not specialize in it. A professional birth photographer is skilled in low light situations, understands the importance of being on call, and knows how to respect the birth space.

What are your go-to support tools/methods?

I provide a basket with tools such as a massage ball roller, aromatherapy oils, and a TENS UNIT. However, the best support I provide is my knowledge and extra pair of hands. Many of the birthing families I support find my suggestions for birthing positions and comfort measures exactly what they need. We discuss during our prenatal appointment comfort measures and talk about methods you have responded well to support in the past. However, things change in labor and I will adjust my style while you are in labor until I can see that it is what you are needing in that moment. If you have a partner, I watch for what they are doing and see what other needs you may have and assure that those are met. If your partner needs additional support, I will also provide that for them.

What if you can't attend my birth?

I make as many measures to assure that I can attend your birth, but sometimes emergencies or illnesses arise. Every birth service I provide also includes a backup photographer/doula. I chose a back-up based on your due date, birth preferences, and who I see would be a good second fit for you. You will meet your back-up during one of your prenatal appointments if you are hiring me as your doula. All of my doula back-ups are a part of the Doulas of Northern Utah Collaborative. Should a back-up be called into the birth, I will do my best to replace them as soon as/if possible. You will not have any additional costs should your back-up arrive. Photos will still be delivered by me if a back-up photographer attends your birth.

How many clients do you take a month?

While I am currently a massage apprentice from the year 2022-23 I will only be taking on average one client a month.

Do you offer "Bump to Baby" Photo packages?

My "Indulgent" package offers a discount for additional photo sessions to create a complete photography package. If you are looking for a complete package that excludes birth photography, message me and I can create a combined service plan with you.

Do you offer video?

As of right now, I am still a student in learning how to make professional videos. I do not offer professional grade videos, but I can discuss the possibility of an add-on video if you specifically request it. I am willing to turn on a go-pro, or move around a video camera for you if needed.

Can I request specific photos?

Birth photography is a unique and beautiful style of photography that is purely documentation. I will not follow a "to photograph list" however, I can take requests such as blurring images to provide modesty, choosing flattering angles, keeping people out of photos, or prioritizing certain parts of your story you anticipate will happen.

What is the purpose of a doula?

A doula is a person that helps create the environment with a birthing person and their partner. They do this by helping them by supporting their physical, mental, emotional needs. When this support is provided, it allows families to focus on what is the most important to them- the story of their little one's arrival.

What is the purpose of Birth Photography?

Birth Photography documents the journey of laboring and birth that brings babies earth side. Birth is an experience that is private and intimate. Many families want to cherish and remember every detail., the support that they got from their partners to their reactions, to holding their little one for the first time. Birth photography does not take away or remove the peace from these intimate moments, but rather preserves and honors it.

Why should I get a Doula-Photographer?

Many families prefer to have as little people in the room when they give birth- or they have hospital policies in place that limit the number of people. Having a doula that can navigate between supporting you and documenting your birth limits the number of people in the room and allows you to have a more intimate atmosphere.

How do you photograph & support at the same Birth?

I am confident in both my skills as a doula and birth photographer, which allows me to switch between my roles from involved labor support. to documenting your birth when my hands are free. During your prenatal appointment, I'll discuss the details with you to assure your priorities are met.

Informed decisions come from a place where you feel safe and  have all of the information you need to make a decision. I'll walk you through what you can expect the process to look like when you hire me. There isn't a rush, take your time, and feel confident in your decision.

After the birth, we will schedule a postpartum appointment within the first two weeks. We will talk about your birth experience, go over your postpartum plan, and I will give you resources as well. Any postpartum add-ons from your package will also be included

When you have decided to hire me and let me know, I'll send an email out to you with forms (general information) an contract (for you to know what to expect and have a mutual agreement) and a $475 non-refundable retainer. Once those are sent, your due date is reserved.

In our consultation, we will get to know each other and the details of your birth. I take the time to help expecting parents to decide what their goals and personal beliefs are about birth. I will also go over how I provide support for you to decide if those match your goals & beliefs.

I provide support when you need me. I remind couples that virtual support during pre-labor is in the best interest for you. At one point in active labor, you will find that additional support is needed and I will attend your birth when you call me. I stay up to 2 hours after the birth.

While I will attend your birth if you go into labor before 37 weeks, I will not be on call. On call means that I am able to attend your birth within the designated timeframe, have a back-up available, and have my phone on me 24/7. I am on call until the arrival of your baby after 37 weeks.

I offer 2 prenatal appointments, they give us the time to connect and prepare for your birth. I talk about comfort measures, birth plans, postpartum plans, labor preparation, and give resources to other professionals. I encourage birth partners to attend as well.

What you can expect while working with me

There's nothing more stressful to me than staring at a menu at a restaurant new to me, with the waitress and my date staring at me while I make a decision. (Okay, there are an evident amount of things more stressful, but I regress). You are already making so many decisions, what birth location are you choosing? Who will be your provider, your doula, your photographer? I"m about to share with you some questions and tools to ask yourself to help you make an informed decision centered in evidence, values, and personal preference, even under a high stress situation such as birth.

Making informed decisions under stress

Trusting your intuition

The birth that you envision is small and intimate- you want a limited birth team. You want the focus of the room to be your new family, and those in it.

You want your birth story documented because it is a beautiful and lifetime event you want to remember and cherish.

You believe that childbirth decisions are parenting decisions, and you want a gentle birth to reflect that.

Your desire is to bring your baby earth side in a calm, peaceful birth environment

I might be a good fit for you if...

yOur Story

"Eva is incredible, she took our engagement photos and then was our doula for my sons birth. My son was being born 8 weeks early and as you can imagine I was stressed, she made sure I was as calm as possible and catered to my every need. "

what Alexis Said:

"Eva did my maternity photos, my birth photos and my family photos. She is always so professional and kind and her pictures are beautiful! She is very responsive and pays attention to little details. I was a little apprehensive about having a photographer at my birth but I am so glad I did! Eva added a great calm energy to my birth and I will forever treasure the photos she took!"

what courtney said:

"Eva was great! I texted her when I went into labor and she came right away. She was kind and confident in her role. She knew how to stay out of the way of the nurses and doctors and still get amazing photos - documenting the birth story of my first born. She conversed with my family and honestly helped the atmosphere in the room stay light and happy. I would definitely choose her again!"

what Katie Says:

"Eva was amazing through the birthing process. She gave me the guidance I needed beforehand and in the moment to help my wife with laboring. When our birth didn’t go as planned, she was ready with methods to help things along, words of encouragement, tools, and creating and atmosphere for my wife to be successful in the type of birth we had hoped for. Somehow through all of this, she was also able to capture incredible photos of the process. The photos we have now are great reminders of what we did during a pivotal moment in our lives as a family."

I want to learn more

The first 6 months of my life was a haze. I was robbed- from my memories and my presence as a new mother.
This is the point of the Fourth Trimester Project. To reclaim, restore, and give parents back the opportunity to heal and to bond through photos.

A Documentary series to continue the conversation about postpartum

The first 6 months of my life was a haze. Postpartum ideally is a cherished stage of parenthood. I was a new mother, it was suppose to be a journey of healing, an intimate period of bonding. But frankly, I was robbed- from my memories and my presence as a new mother. As I try to claim it back, and I find myself doing that by looking back to my phone recordings and photos.
This is the point of the Fourth Trimester Project. To reclaim, restore, and give parents back the opportunity to heal and to bond.  I encourage all families/ parents to apply and participate.
